Most species of adult mosquitoes prefer shady areas and times of day so they are most active from dusk till dawn, but often become active when there is sufficient cloud cover or in dark and shady areas. The sun causes them to dry up and die, so they prefer to avoid direct sunshine.

Ideal Breeding Conditions for Mosquitoes

When it comes to breeding needs, mosquitoes prefer stagnant water to lay their eggs. Ponds, marshes, swamps and other wetland habitats are common breeding grounds. But it should be noted that many species of mosquitoes are just as capable of laying their eggs in stagnant water – often using containers of water as egg-deposit sites. Though these areas a perfect for laying their eggs, mosquitoes thrive in a variety of locations. They can successfully grow in numbers even when not in their natural habitat.

Mosquitoes Can Live Anywhere

A lot of mosquitoes prefer hot and humid environments. Because of the availability of water infestations can occur easily in tropical areas where it is warm but also damp. Oddly enough, some species of mosquitoes have even been known to inhabit freezing locations such as the Arctic Circle. While most species prefer stagnant water mosquito larvae can be found in various habitats – even in transient waters such as floodwater, ditches and woodland pools.

There are some species that can even breed in polluted water, freshwater, acid water and brackish water swamps. The species include: Anopheles, Culex, Culiseta, Coquillettidia and Uranotaenia. Other mosquito larvae can found in very small container water sources such as puddles upon leaves and stagnant water within small pools.

Protect Your Home from Mosquitoes

Because of their ability to breed in just about any form and size of water it is important that you take special care in protecting your home. This means identifying where water can collect around your home – birdbaths, buckets, etc…and ensuring that either the water gets cycled out often or does not have a chance to collect for long periods of time.
